Need Help?
Click on the help link above to learn more about how to use your wiki. Dear On-line Students,
We would like to welcome you to EDF689. You are about to start your journey into the land of inquiry. We are looking forward to working with you over the next few months. We are really excited to share ideas and to have lots of points of view to consider.
To ease your mind for those of you (who like Hank) are happy when lots of details are provided, we have listed below the requirements for the course and the procedure and schedule that we will follow.
For those of you who are overwhelmed with detail, (like Susan), glance at those topics you find most interesting and save the details for when you need the information!!!
The 19th Century military strategist Baron Von Moltke was most famous for saying, "No Battle Plan Survives Contact With The Enemy". Well hank says no plan survives implementation. The PLANNED Calendar has been posted below. As a general rule our posting date will be Sundays and you will have a week to do your posts. This schedule is only a PLAN and it must be flexible by both you and us. If you fall behind please try to catch up as quickly as possible. We recognize that there are different needs and demands. Relax. It will all work out. Our plan is to have you all finished in December!
There are a lot of details contained here - please copy this information into a Word file for later reference if you want to work off line!
The purpose of this course is to introduce you to educational research through a project based learning approach. You will explore the methods and materials of research as you complete a proposal for your Masters Project. We do this step by step; week by week. We usually do not recommend that you take this course if you are not ready to implement your project and complete it within the next year. You must have completed 21 hours of your Masters program to be in this research course (or have special permission!). The Masters Project usually is completed in the last year of your program. Check with your cohort coordinator or SUNY for clarity.
The Masters Project can be done individually or in small groups. Sometimes you will find a topic or research question that appeals to a group of you within or across grade levels. In that case we would like you to consider working together as you start this course. We encourage group work.
In modules 4-5 you will decide on a topic and research question. That is when you will identify for certain if you will be working in a group or if you would rather work alone.
Many of you are from different cohorts from many places around the world. As we explore ideas you may find you have common interests and would like to work together using the internet web 2.0 tools. That is fine. We can have teachers on different continents working together on the same research project.
Participation in this course will involve lectures, readings, discussion between and among your colleagues, conference calls with Sue and Hank, and postings of activities described in each of the 10 modules.
Your grade will be based on the following:
1. Discussion Board Postings. (25%) . Please be sure to post on the correct pages as directed or you will not receive credit for your work. Always use your first and last name on all postings both individual or group or you will not get credit. We do not know who "Coolguy29" is and we will not try to find out!
Individual and group postings are done both in response to the assignment questions and in commenting on each others’ work when asked to provide critical feedback. Such feedback is important and not meant to just “pat each other on the back”. This is where you must be a critical friend. You will not earn full credit for posts that are not thoughtful and complete.
Timely, thoughtful comments that address the questions posed and lead to lively discussions that enhance learning and make our discussions meaningful and relevant.
Group postings are allowed and encouraged if the assignment states so. Always use your first and last name on all postings both individual or group or you will not get credit.Otherwise the postings will be individual. All group assignments can be posted by one person but again we need to have all group members names posting.
There will be a minimum of 2 quizzes that you will receive and complete. These will be completed individually. No group work here.
3. Proposal for Action Research Masters Project (50 points)
If you follow our feedback, we expect all of you to get full credit for this plan.
a. There are 11 components to the proposal. Starting with Session 4 they are part of your session submissions. It is important for you to start your own Word folder, keeping all the assignments and pieces in a single location so that at the end of the course you have all the information you need to implement and conduct your study.
Each assignment will be returned to you for editing or correction if it is not satisfactory. Our primary role is to help you design an action research study that is meaningful, relevant, and accurate in terms of research methodology. We will provide you with feedback so you can develop a final draft.
b. The parts Action Plan Proposal are:
Research idea and rationale
Research questions and variables (Research Sheet #1)
Detailed description of your intervention
Description of your sample (Research Sheet #2)
Data collection Matrix
Likert Scale
Research Design
Threats to validity
Data analysis plan (Research Sheet #3)
Summary of one article (Summary sheet will be provided)
Final action plan
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE FOR POSTING
There are 10 modules for this course. Since we are meeting and working with cultures, religions and schools from around the world and there are different holidays and important dates we understand the need for flexibility. Due dates will be posted as we get to each session. We do not allow anyone to work ahead so each topic will be available on the online date usually posted one session ahead.
YOU need to also be flexible. If you miss a session for any reason you should attempt to catch up as quickly as possible.
No one may work ahead. General feedback for each session is provided at the start of each module to assure that participants are grasping the concepts of the previous module. Readings may be posted for future sessions but they may be modified depending upon the understanding of the previous session. Working ahead may create problems and unnecessary work for you. PLEASE, do not try to work ahead or you may end up needing to redo your work.
We will post a schedule for the beginning sessions here as soon as we get everyone online: These dates will be estimates. They will change if more time is needed at any stage of the course and they are also flexible and dependent on individual school schedules.
Please contact the instructors if there is a reason you are unable to meet dead lines for any particular week.
